A short biography of comedic actor Bert Lahr On August 13, 1895, Bert Lahr was born. His parents weren't wealthy, and the family grew up in poverty. Bert's given name was Irving Lahrheim. He later changed it for show business. Lahr hated school, and left in his early teens. He learned by taking in vaudeville shows, and quickly began singing on the streets with friends. His baritone voice was a welcome addition to the acts he joined early on in his career. Lahr began performing in Burlesque Theaters. His specialty quickly became comedy, and he would portray funny characters that were the stark opposite of his rough fosterage. Fate was in the cosmos when producer Blutch Cooper discovered Bert Lahr one evening during one of his performances. The producer put Lahr in The Best Show in Town . It was in this performance that Lahr perfected his comedic acting prowess. In 1927 Bert Lahr made his way to Broadway. It was then that he began to experience greater success with a role in Harry Delmar's Revels. Lahr spent the next years of his life acting on Broadway in shows such as Life Begins At 8:30 and Scandals. Lahr was now beginning to tire of Broadway. Hollywood was calling. Lahr's Hollywood career began with roles in Zaza and Just Around the Corner with Shirley Temple. It wasn't until 1939 that Lahr landed the role that he would be remembered for until this day. The Wizard of Oz cast Lahr as the Cowardly Lion. The character was perfect for Lahr's comedic instincts. The lovable Lion became a hit with audiences. However, Lahr never really found more success in films. He turned his attention to theater, taking on some dramatic roles. He earned praise for his role on the stage as Estragon in Waiting for Godot. The play did not find much success, but Lahr was a standout and garnered praise for his work in the dramatic role. Bert Lahr passed away on December 4, 1967 at the age of 75 while filming The Night They Raided Minksy's. Lahr was truly a gifted comedic performer that still brings a smile to millions worldwide.
