Besides keeping one eye on Troy Smith, the Bucs will have to keep the other eye on [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] on every play,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both on the ground and in the passing game. To date, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has accumulated 778 yards rushing at 4.2 yards per carry, and he’s pulled in a team-best 41 catches for 415 yards. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is on pace to record 2121 yards from scrimmage this year and is a threat to break his own team record for yards from scrimmage that he set in 2006 with 2180 yards.
The Buccaneers head to San Francisco today for their matchup in the bay area with Mike Singletary’s 3-6 San Francisco 49ers. If there has been a house of horrors for the Bucs, one might say it is Candlestick Park. The Bucs are 1-11 there all-time, with their lone victory coming on October 26, 1980 by the score of 24-23.
The Buccaneer offense will have their hands full with DE Justin Smith. Smith has been a disruptive force on the right side of the line this season in Coach Mike Singletary’s 3-4 defense. Through 9 games, Smith has put together a Pro Bowl-calibur season, tallying 42 tackles and a team-leading 5 sacks. He will surely draw double teams on Sunday and Donald Penn and Ted Larsen will have their hands full trying to contain Smith and establish running lanes on the left side of the line.
Whtere the Bucs could find success is in the passing game against a 49er secondary that ranks 20th in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game at 231 yards per game. The past 2 weeks, the 49ers allowed 370 yards through the air to Kyle Orton and the Broncos, and 251 yards to Sam Bradford and the Rams. The Bucs will have the services of WR Mike Williams, who was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of DUI. According to Raheem Morris, Mike Williams will start and resume his normal duties. He will not be limited in playing time by the arrest.
However, these are not your older brother’s Buccaneers, at least in one regard. Under the on-field leadership of Josh Freeman, these young, us-against-the-world Buccaneers are finding hostile environments quite comfortable recently. Prior to falling (literally) a yard short in the Georgia Dome against the Falcons, the Bucs tied a franchise record going back to last season with 5 consecutive road wins.
Buccaneers Set Their Sights on [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 49ers
Much like the Bucs, The 49ers are hoping that a trip to London resulted in a new, long-term starting quarterback. Troy Smith took over the reins at quarterback against Denver and led the team to a 24-16 victory. Smith was impressive in the 4th quarter, engineering 3 scoring drives and finishing 12/19 for 196 yards with a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown, and 115.3 passer rating. Last week against the Rams, Smith passed for 358 yards and a touchdown, engineering 3 scoring drives in the 4th quarter and overtime.
That said, the Bucs could find [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Justin Smith, and the San Francisco 49ers to be unwelcome hosts on Sunday. Put aside the fact that west coast travel is a major burden, as NFC South teams sport a combined 62-28-2 record against the 49ers in Candlestick Park all-time. The 49ers, after starting 0-5, have won 3 out of their last 4 games and have reasserted themselves as contenders in the NFC West behind a suddenly-effective offense led by QB Troy Smith.
