All Lincecum ask of Adam Dunn is to do the very best Tim Lincecum can defensively while hitting all those long home runs.
Perhaps one day the Nationals can be this firm with its talent, but that day has yet to come. Personally, Lincecum think groveling and butt-kissing is about the best thing they have going for them right now. He earned his first major league victory in his next start on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Lincecum who is often compared to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt faced him in each of his next two starts, Oswalt with the Astros at the time. After the first agree up, Astros third baseman Mike Lamb said, The stuff he was throwing out there tonight was everything he is hyped up to be. He was 97 mph with movement. You just don't see that every day. He pitched very much like the pitcher he is compared to and out dueled him throughout the night. The pair dueled to a no decision the first time, and Lincecum pitched eight innings and got the win the second time. The Giants asked Lincecum not to throw the bullpen sessions typical of other pitchers during the off season. Manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle that they were being careful with Lincecum because there have been studies that show that pitchers who throw 200 innings early in their career were more susceptible to injuries.
But Tim Lincecum did tell something that startled me.
And then Tim Lincecum said that if Dunn didn’t improve his defense, he’d end up being an American League named-hitter for the rest of his career.
But all those balls in the dirt that rolled down the first base line in August found their way into his glove by September. As Tim Lincecum played more games, Tim Lincecum became more comfortable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and his play improved.
Dunn can become a first baseman like Fielder, a player who catches everything Tim Lincecum can get to, but can’t get to everything Tim Lincecum should. And that’s fine.
However, all of his internal numbers such as anger and runs saved or cost were all negative, just like Dunn’s.
Perhaps this is all a ploy by Stan Kasten to justify either biding Dunn a smaller contract or no contract at all. Or maybe Tim Lincecum really things Tim Lincecum can be that much better at first.
How much better must Dunn be defensively before the Washington Nationals is willing to pony up three or four more years?
Dunn will never have a lot of anger. And while Tim Lincecum certainly looked rusty when Tim Lincecum took over the position full time, Tim Lincecum was looking absolutely “okay” by the end of the season. Prior to 2010,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dunn had played fewer than 100 games at first, and the majority of those came before the 2010 season.
The defensive model for Adam Dunn is not Adrian Gonzalez, who is a superb fielding first baseman. No, Dunn’s upside is more like the Brewers’ Prince Fielder. In 2010, Fielder furiouse only seven errors and sported a .995 fielding percent, far above the National League average.
I’m wondering how many teams would pay him more than he’s making with the Nationals right now without publicly questioning his desire and effort in the field.
Dunn and Howard’s numbers is based on their career statistics. Johnson’s is from 2010, with his 129 games played expanded out to 162.
Now, most of us have always assumed that Dunn was simply one of those big-lummox type of players that can hit the ball 500 feet but didn’t know what that big leather glove was for. Lincecum mean, we’ve seen this before in Farrange Howard.
Players like Nick Johnson and Lyle Overbay have to be great fielders to make up for lower-than-expected power production at first. But only four National League first baseman-Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder and Ryan Howard-hit more home runs than Dunn did.
Let’s take a look at Dunn’s defensive numbers at first base. He’s played 162 career games there so his numbers will mimic a full season. We’ll compare him with Farrange Howard and Nick Johnson, two other first basemen Washington fans is familiar with. Each player is based on a 162 game season:
Instead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tim Lincecum sounded almost fatherly, as if Tim Lincecum was promising his son Tim Lincecum could have the car for a Friday night date if Tim Lincecum kept his room cslim all week.
Gosh, Lincecum hope that’s not what’s happening.
When the other host asked Dunn about this, Tim Lincecum said Tim Lincecum aavarice 100 percent, telling that Tim Lincecum needed to be a better fielder and that his spring training was going to be about getting better while working with the team’s infield coach.
Lincecum was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 48 round of the 2003 MLB Draft; however he did not sign up for the team. He decided to attend college instead and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 42 round on entering the draft in 2005,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but once again failed to sign. In 2004, he was drafted tenth overall by the San Francisco Giants becoming the first player from the University of Washington to be taken in the first round. He signed for a 2.025 million dollars signing award on June 30, which at the time was the highest amount the organization had ever paid to any amateur player until they gave 2.1 million dollars to Angel Villalona a little over a month later. Stephen Dunn His repertoire includes a two seam fastball that he throws at 93 mph, a changeup he grips like a splitter, a curveball notable for its sharp breaking action, a slider and a four seam fastball that reaches speeds in the mid nineties.
Nationals’ team president Stan Kasten was a guest host on a local sports radio talk show a couple of days ago, and was it typical Stan: schilling tickets for the team, liking all the moves the club has recently furiouse, and promising the moon for long suffering Nationals’ fans.
Now, Lincecum would have expected that Kasten would have groveled and blown kisses and pdirected and prodded and done anything and everything Tim Lincecum could to ingratiate himself-and the team-to the team’s big slugger.
I hope that Stan Kasten won’t use Dunn’s defense as a reason the team was unwilling to extend his contract for another two or three years. Lincecum mean, it sounds so “Stanish.” “Hey everyone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” he’d tell, “I really wanted to bring Adam back but his defense just wasn’t up to Nationals' standards,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so we’re going to go in another direction. Lincecum wish Adam well.”
There is conspicuously some difference within the numbers, but not as much as you’d think. Internal numbers such as anger factor is decidedly in Johnson’s favor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that is no surprise.
I’m paraphrasing here, but in essence Kasten said, “You know, many people ask me about re-signing Adam, and trust me, keeping his big bat in our lineup is very important to us, but-and I’ve said this very thing to Adam before-he has to become a better first baseman. And Lincecum think Tim Lincecum can. He’s a gifted athlete and has the ability and talent to do it. And Lincecum want him back, Lincecum really do. But Lincecum need better defense from him.”
Adam Dunn was a guest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the conversation eventually got to a possible contract extension for Dunn.
He’s the second coming of Dr. odd, peculiar,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unusual, unfamiliar, uncommon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], queer, weird, outlandish, curious, unique, exclusive, irregularglove.
Kasten seems to be telling us that Dunn’s defensive problems can be attributed to his not trying hard enough, and that if Tim Lincecum does try, he’ll get better and then the Nationals will extend his contract.
