New York Jets holdout Darrelle Revis drives 'Hard Knocks' hype despite being absent from show

When they roll credits at the end of the next episode of "Hard Knocks," the football media should be acknowledged - saluted, too.

Their words, headlines and other stuff tell the only story. Yes, the driving force of "Hard Knocks" is Revis jersey, a guy who has not appeared - not for one second - on the HBO show. Revis jersey is making television history. The last ghost to drive viewership and interest to this extent was named Casper.
The sound you hear along Sixth Ave., around 42nd St., is laughter coming out of HBO headquarters. That HBO suits, along with their partners at NFL Films, have a hit on their hands is now a given. Without the saga of Revis jersey' holdout the hit could easily be a miss. Not only is Rex Ryan looking for Revis jersey, but so is the rest of the free world.
Those reports indicating Revis jersey was close to signing (look for more to come) were bound to surface. How fortuitous (for HBO, that is) the stories came during the run-up to the third episode Wednesday, with the [url=/topics/New+York+Jets]Jets[/url]' media "blackout" on everything Revis jersey in full effect. HBO Sports boss Ross Greenburg and NFL Films ruler [url=/topics/Steve+Sabol]Steve Sabol[/url] were likely happy to see the media go out on a limb, one they knew would be sawed off.
This week, at least three media outlets reported a Revis jersey deal was imminent. It started Sunday when The Dallas Morning News' Tim Cowlishaw said Revis jersey would sign by Wednesday. This set off the usual chain reaction, which included select parasites, posing as sports radio yakkers, knocking the hell out of these dispatches (Thursday Cowlishaw, a stand-up guy, admitted, "I was wrong") but immediately giving them credence by offering endless repetitive Pope-like analysis.
The more stunning fantasy here, which HBO suits had to love, were reports that Revis jersey was going to make some grand pronouncement on "Hard Knocks." What suspense! Was this supposed to be an Al Capone's vault kind of thing, a LeBron James caper? All that was missing was Geraldo Rivera. Or maybe Jim Gray.
Those delivering this "information" apparently had never watched previous editions of "Hard Knocks." The show's mission statement is to chronicle an NFL training camp with its cameras. And pick up Rex Ryan's F-bombs with its microphones.
"Hard Knocks" rarely breaks news. That's not its purpose. No matter. All these bogus reports helped feed the ratings beast.
Fed it to such an extent, the bean counters can't even believe it. They are having trouble processing what's going on. Or as one NFL source said: "Executives at HBO and NFL Films are amazed how visible and top-of-mind the show has become."
The first two installments of "Hard Knocks" drew a total audience of 7.5 million HBO subscribers, 11% higher than the first two episodes of the 2009 show, featuring the Bengals. It would not be surprising if the momentum - in terms of viewers - carried over into Wednesday night's third episode (the numbers for that show are not yet in).
Nor would it be surprising if the speculation, unsubstantiated reports and insinuendo continue along the Revis jersey beat. Ironic, ain't it, that many of these reality shows have staged storylines, feuding and manufactured anticipation of some sort of reunion.
When it came to Revis jersey, that's where the media were at. "Hard Knocks," which is billed as "reality" programming, was actually real. The show stayed the course, providing another inside look at the Jets. Doughboy Ryan even had some welcome company in the obscenity department.
Now, Dennis Thurman (secondary coach), Mike Westhoff (special teams coach) and Brian Schottenheimer (offensive coordinator) have all become official targets of Tony Dungy. These tough guys all threw big league F-bombs on Episode 3. When's Woody going to unload?
Perhaps Dungy will jump back into his sanctimonious, self-righteous bag and take these guys to task, too, thus providing more publicity for "Hard Knocks." Remember, the former coach (and Dan Patrick, his NBC colleague) thought it would be a terrific idea for Roger Goodell to tell Ryan to clean up his act for the "Hard Knocks" cameras.
Someone, maybe even a brainiac at NBC, should have reminded these fellows that NFL Films is the league's video subsidiary and propaganda arm. Giving fans an unvarnished look at training camp, sometimes graphic in sight and sound, is good for the NFL's business.
This is what the NFL culture is. And it includes rough language from a blowhard like Ryan and the rest of his cranky crew. It also includes the violent, intentional, crippling hits Dungy has no problem describing when he appears on the "Football Night In America" studio show.
There's room in the tent for everyone. Good actors and bad. This week they all had a role to play. Some were on camera - most were off. They injected double-shock power into "Hard Knocks."
A show with a star who never appears on camera.
